“Break _ Captain Smart Has Been Arrested By IGP Christian Tetteh” In a recent development, Ghanaian broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service. The arrest was reportedly ordered by Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno. While specific details about the arrest are limited, it follows a series of legal challenges and controversies involving Captain Smart.
Earlier this year, Deputy IGP Yohuno filed a defamation lawsuit against Captain Smart and Media General, alleging that the broadcaster made defamatory statements during a radio and TV program on December 27, 2024. Captain Smart claimed that certain members of the Ghana Armed Forces and officials within the Ghana Police Service were planning to destabilize Ghana’s constitutional order through a coup d’état. He also alleged that Mr. Yohuno’s appointment as Deputy IGP was politically influenced and that he attended meetings to secure the position. In response, Mr. Yohuno sought general damages for defamation, an injunction to stop further defamatory remarks, and a court order for retractions and unqualified apologies to be aired on Onua TV and FM.
Captain Smart has previously faced arrests for making statements deemed unsavory by authorities. In December 2021, he was arrested for making pronouncements that hinged on peace and security, leading to charges of offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace under section 207 of the Criminal Act, 1960 (Act 29).
This situation underscores ongoing tensions between media practitioners and law enforcement in Ghana, raising concerns about press freedom and the boundaries of journalistic expression.
